TY - THES TY - BOOK T1 - Disease prevalence and clinicopathological changes in senior and geriatric cats presented to University Veterinary Hospital, UPM A1 - Lim, May Lyn LA - English UL - http://discoverylib.upm.edu.my/discovery/Record/47133 AB - This study reports on the prevalence of disease and clinicopathological changes in senior and geriatric cat presented to Unversiti Veterinary Hospital (UVH), UPM. The age distribution of cats presented, level of preventive health care and cost of treatment per cat per annum were also determined. Patient medical records from 2009 to 2011 were reviewed to extract information on patient signalment, diagnosis, laboratory tests results and cost of treatment. The majority of tehg feline patients are less than 3 years old, and senior and geriatric cats comprised 1.4% ot total number of cats. Kidney and dental diseases, neoplasia and feline upper respiratory tract disease were the most commonly reported disorders in senior and geriatric cats. Furthermore, blood lymphocytes count and albumin concentration were significant lower in older cats compared to adult as a result of immunosenescence and age-related physiological changes. Preventive care was poor for senior and geriatric cars with only 9% of them presented for wellness examination. In general, cost of veterinary care was significant lower for cats receiving preventive health care than those that did not. This information from this study should be used by veterinary practitioners to better understand and anticipate health problems of senior and geriatric cats and to encourage clients to subscribe to the semi-annual wellness programme for their older cats.
