Once a person is infected with HIV disease, the virus begins to attack and destroy the CD4 cells in immune system. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the last stage of HIV manifestation in which at this stage the immune systems is severely weakened and low. Teenagers were among the most susceptible to be the victims of HIV/AIDS due to low level of knowledge by themselves in know the way of prevention of the disease. Co-existence of high risk behaviors, unsafe sexual behavior, together with inadequate knowledge and major misconceptions about HIV/AIDS give in increasing the vulnerability of university students toward HIV infection. The knowledge about the HIV/AIDS is the basic thing in order to prevent further spread of HIV/AIDS. Knowledge regarding the HIV/AIDS transmission, methods of prevention and effect on body is very important since effective preventive measure can be achieved from high level of HIV/AIDS knowledge among the students. OBJECTIVE: The main objective is to determine the level of knowledge on HIV/AIDS and its associated factors among first year undergraduate students in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study design and both stratified and convenient sampling method was used. A self-administered questionnaire was used as a study instrument to collect the data. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the socio demographics characteristic, source of information, and level of knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS which include mode of transmission. method of prevention and effects on body. Chi square test was used to determine association between level of knowledge and sociodemographic factors and source of information. A p value 5 0.05 was considered as statistically significant in this study. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: A total of 280 students were involved in the study and majority of the students were female (77.9%) and aged between 19-20 years old (86.4%). It was found that 89.6% from the students had high level of HIV/AIDS knowledge. The most common source of information was from the television (42.1%). There was no significant association between level of knowledge and sociodemographic factors and source of information. CONCLUSION: This study found most of students had high level of HIV/AIDS knowledge. However, there is still a need to improve the knowledge of some of the students which are still lacking. It is very important to raise the knowledge and awareness among young adults about the disease in order to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. It is strongly recommended such an effective knowledge and education programs should be mainstreamed across universities and schools to prevent new HIV infection. In addition, implementation of peer-led HIV prevention program where students may share and exchange information among them through daily conversation, can be implemented Keywords: Level of knowledge, source of information, knowledge on HIV/AIDS, Malaysia
