%0 Thesis %0 Book %A Ernie Nur Hamisah Ahmad Bajuri. %D 2016 %G English %T Prevalence of stress and its associated factors among students in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia %X Introduction: Stress can be defined as a non-specific response from the body which perceived to cope with the stressor where our body experienced with the changing environment which gives emotional and physical effect that can be positive or negative influence. Tertiary education is the phase of stressful period and environment to students which can lead to alteration of psychological and physical well-being. Demographical characteristics, academic requirement, social and environment and interpersonal factors could lead to stress among students. General objective: The aim of the study is to measure the prevalence of stress among students in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia and determine the sources of stress experienced by students. Methodology: A cross-sectional study design using question with stratified random sampling method to determine the level of stress among students in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Universiti Putra Malaysia. The 12-items General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ), to evaluate stress levels and stressors. Ethical approval was obtained prior to the study. All the data were analysed using Statistically Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the prevalence of stress and the factors associated with stress among students. The associations between variables were analysed using Chi-square test. A P value <0.05 was considered as significant association. Result: A total of 277 questionnaires distributed to the students, a total of 252 (91%) participated in this study. 61.5% (155 students) experienced high stress. Meanwhile, 38.5% (97 students) were having low stress. Dietetic students perceived the highest stress with 158.18 based on the mean rank. Followed by nursing and nutritional and community students (141.00), environmental and occupational health students (124.80), medical students (121.83) and biomedical students (106.29). Academic requirement is the major sources of stress among students. Programme is the only demographic characteristic that associates with stress among students (p<0.005). The significant association also found between stress among students and academic requirement (p<0.005). Conclusion: In this study, 61.5% students in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences experienced high stress. Health sciences students dominate the top 3 ranking in perceiving stress. Dietetic students perceived the highest stress compared to another programme. Academic related stressors are the main sources of stress among students which are the same as previous studies. Significant associations found between the programme and academic requirement with stress. The findings from this study could help in the early identification of mental health problems.
