LA - English YR - 2016 UL - http://discoverylib.upm.edu.my/discovery/Record/571905 AB - Introduction: Anxiety is a natural part of life and it is usually triggered by an event or an unpredictable outcome like surgery. If the level of anxiety is high during preoperative, it can lead to death, longer hospital stays, longer wound healing and increase the desires for anesthesia or analgesics after the surgery. Hence, this study was done in order to determine the level of anxiety among cataract patients before going to surgery. Objective: To determine the level of anxiety, factors associated with anxiety and their association with anxiety among preoperative cataract patients in a public hospital, Selangor. Method: The study design of the research was a cross-sectional study. This study include patients that went for cataract surgery in ward 6A (ophthalmology ward) and at day care in Hospital Serdang. Stratified random sampling method was used in this study. Data collection was conducted from March 2016 until April 2016. The data was analysed through descriptive analysis to determine the data distribution normality, frequencies, mean, percentages and standard deviation. Chi-square Test of Independence was used to determine the association between independent variables and dependent variables. P ≤0.05 was considered as significantly significant. Result: A total of 105 (93.75% response rate) respondents, had participated in the study. Findings showed, overall 28 (26.7%) of preoperative cataract patients had significant "state" anxiety (having S-STAI scores of 54 and above). There was significant association between age and level of anxiety (p≤0.05, p=0.009). Conclusion: Generally 26.7% of preoperative cataract patients in Hospital Serdang had anxiety before going to surgery. Age was associated with patients' level of anxiety. However this study found that there was no association between other factors and level of anxiety among preoperative cataract patients. Keywords: anxiety, cataract, preoperative anxiety, cataract surgery, and preoperative cataract anxiety. CN - FPSK5 2016 25 ER -
