520 |a Fascioliasis is a common parasitic disease in ruminant. The study was carried out to conduct a morphological and molecular characterization to identity of fasciola species found in the liver of ruminant slaughtered at Shah Alam and Banting abattoirs. The biliary tract of liver were cut to see the presence of fluke. Out of the 34 animals examined, eight (four cattle and four buffaloes) were positive. All adult flukes were measured based on eight parameters; body length (BL), maximum body width (BW), conical length (CL), conical width (CW), distance between the ventral sucker and the posterior end of the body (VS-P), ratio between BL and VS-P, ratio between BL and BW and body area (BA) using calipers. Subsequently, five adult liver flukes were taken from different animals for molecular characterization. Based on the results obtained, the range for all parameters were overlapping for cattle and buffaloes although the mean value of the parameters for the cattle is higher than buffaloes. All liver fluke samples were suggestive of Fasciola gigantica based on morphological and molecular analysis.
