520 |a Introduction: The morphometry of the distal radius is important in understanding the reduction of distal radius fractures and the design of distal radius plates or prostheses. The aim of this study is to determine the eight morphometric parameters from three ethnic groups in UPM. Materials and methods: 334 subjects, aged from 18-40 years old, from three main ethnic groups were chosen, and the following parameters measured using Ortho Scan Mobile DI machine: radial length, distal radial height, width, palmar tilt, inclination, depth, ulnar length and variance. Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test was done. Results: The radial length of the distal radius averaged 23.01 ±1.90 (right), 22.77±2.01 (left). The radial width of the distal radius averaged 2.89±O.30 (right), 2.87±0.29 (left). The distal radial depth averaged 2.ll±O.26 (right), 2.l1±0.24 (left). The palmar tilt of the distal radius averaged 1O.44±5.00 (right) and 1O.60±5.02 (left). The radial inclination averaged 23.74±3.56 (right) 23.68±3.90 (left). The ulnar variance averaged -0.32±O.18 (right) and -O.12±O.l7 (left). The ulnar length averaged 25.32±1.79 (right), 25.26±1.83 (left). Discussion: Results of this study bear out the conclusion that the common morphometric distal radius parameters of our population are not comparable to those reported in the Western population. The radial and ulnar lengths were not available for comparison. Amongst Malaysia population, it was found that the Indians had a significantly longer radial and ulnar lengths as compared to the Malays and the Chinese suggesting a possibly Aryan descent predisposing them to do so. The other two races have comparable values but we couldn't corroborate with Caucasian parameters. The radial inclination was found to be more in the Chinese population as compared to the Malays but not to the Indians. Conclusion: There was significant clinical difference found between the three ethnic groups for the radial length, ulnar length and radial inclination (right side). These differences will have an impact on development of fixation devices for distal radius Keywords : Distal radial height, distal radial width, radial length, palmar tilt, radial inclination, ulnar variance, radial depth and ulnar length
