| 520 | |a Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease which affects animals and humans. It can be caused by different types of mycobacterium species which known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). As the human-wildlife conflict is on the rise, the interaction between humans and non-human primates (NHP) is unavoidable. There are diseases which has public health concerned that could be carried by wild NHP including zoonotic TB. Thus, this study is conducted to detect the presence ofMTBC in NHP in selected areas in Selangor. Opportunistic sampling was done where fresh carcass with a total of 30 long tailed macaques (Macaca fascularis) were obtained through a culling programme under PERHILITAN . Samples were subjected to gross post mortem assessment for TB-like lesion (TBLL), serum collection for antibody detection against M tuberculosis using Ecotest® kit. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Ziehl-Neelsen staining was conducted for antigen detection. Two sets of primers were used, 16MYC-F and 16MYC-R for detection of genus Mycobacterium, whereas TBl-F and TBl-R for MTBC. TB-like lesion was found in one of the samples with no significant finding for staining, and by using Ecotest® kit, it gives 3.33% detection respectively. For single PCR, there was no 372-bp detected, which specifically indicates MTBC. Meanwhile there is detection of genus Mycobacterium which generates 564-bp. In conclusion, antibody and antigen against Mycobacterium spp. has been detected in wild macaques by using rapid Ecotest® and by molecular PCR, suggestive of environmental mycobacteria, however their accuracy need to be tested further. Thus, the interaction between human and wild NHP should be minimised and preventive measures for disease transmission should be practiced. | ||
