TY - THES TY - BOOK T1 - Assessment of ozone (o3) injury on foliage of (syzygium myrtifolium) and other selected tree species in Bintulu A1 - Muhammad Shabri Salamat, LA - English UL - http://discoverylib.upm.edu.my/discovery/Record/596086 AB - The study was conducted due to the increasing of 0zone (03) concentration in atmosphere that has cause effect on humans, vegetation and materials. The objectives of the study were to assess the extent of O3 injury, abiotic and biotic injury on foliage Syzygiun myrtifolium and other selected tree species. Besides, to assess the physiological growth effects and the concentration of polluted O3 on leaves of Syzygium myrtifolium and other selected trees in Bintulu. This research vwas carried out for six months from October 2016 until March 2017 to find the ozone (O3) injury on foliage of Syzygium myrtifolium and other selected tree species as the planting material. For this experiment, the using of all factors including biotic and abiotic factor was determined through the sample tree. In addition, the assessment of physiological growth effects also was determined in this study using the same planting material. The chlorophyll content, leaf area index (LAI), total number of leaves, and weight of wax content were measured as the parameter of this experiment. In assessing all of these purposes, the concentration of polluted O3 in six study area of Bintulu were taken using Ogawa passive sampler. No O; symptom was detected on all sample tree selected because most of the leaves were affected by pathogens (fungi), insect pest, abiotic factor and human influence. Kolej Vokasional have the highest percentage of the injury leaves with (70.22 %) followed by the SMK Asyakirin with (65.11%), Stadium Muhibbah (50%), SM Kai Dee (42.44%), St. Anthony Church (36.66%), and Universiti Putra Malaysia have the lowest with (33.77%). The highest chlorophyll content was recorded at Kolej Vokasional in October 2016 with mean 65.35 mg cm², In addition, the highest leaves area index (LAI) is at St. Anthony Church in month of December 2016 with mean 2.0007 m²/m². Other than that, the highest mean of leaves number is at Kolej Vokasional in month of October 2016 with 634.0. For wax degradation, the highest weight of wax is at SMK Asyakirin among study sites in month January 2017 which is 0.035600 g for the new leaves. The outcomes for physiological growth on tree are randomly and no pattern. This is due to the environmental surrounding and 03 concentration during data taken. Regarding 03 concertration, the using of Ogawa passive sampler and Ion Chromatography (IC) method produced no reading at all. But, still this study ara also expected to contribute to the environmental awareness to the general public as plants bio-indicator had more potential to be used in communicating about the issues of environmental pollution.
