Until now, dry feed substitution for live feed (weaning) is only performed after some weeks of life in marine fish hatcheries. Weaning is crucial for lowering production costs and to meet the demand for high and constant quality juveniles. By studying digestive enzyme activity onset during sea bass larvae development, researches at II\lRAlIFREMER determined the nutritional requirements in marine fish larvae before metamorphosis. These studies allowed the definition of optimal protein, dietary fat and phospholipids levels from both quantitative and qualitative point of view. Gemma Micro, a revolutionary pre-starter diet, designed to replace Artemia in the first feeding of marine fish larvae was developed on the basis of the specific research by INRNIFREMER. When using live feed replacement diets, feed allotment and distribution in larval tanks must be managed differently from live feed. Specialised micro-feeding systems have been developed to suspend and introduce the feed below the surface of the water -dispersing the feed evenly in the water column. The presentation will highlight critical areas of larval nutrition and feed management, and feature case studies on several different temperate and tropical fish species.
