Achoimre:Physico-chemical and biological characteristics of river Ganga have been studied in the area of Serampore (station I) and Barrackpore (station II), West Bengal, India with a view to assess the condition of the river Ganga. Water samples, benthic fauna were collected from the two stations. Less number of Tubificid were recorded in station II than in station I whereas chironomid larvae were found maximum in station I. The study indicates that station I is more polluted than station II.
