Description
Summary:Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a condition involving the musculoskeletal system of birds including chickens. It is a condition where there is a mass of hypertrophic cartilage develops in the proximal end of the tibiotarsal bone in broilers and turkeys and it may cause lameness and limb deformities. The exact cause leading to this condition is still unknown. Severe cases of this problem may lead to drop in poultry industry. Condemnation of chikens having TD is common. Td also may lead to secondary disease caused by bacteria and this also will efect the health of the chikens. One hundred and thirty two broiler chikens obtained from six broiler farms in Johore and Perak were used in this study. They were gathered from 17 flocks and named as group A to Q. Their age was ranging from 14 to 43 days old.Serum sampels were collected and analysed for detection of reovirus antibody using enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) technique. On necropsy, the gross lesions were recorded. The thickness of the growth plate of the tibia and tarsal were measured and scored. Sampels of the joint tissue were fixed in 10% formalin for histological examinations. In the determining the incident of TD, the lesions were observed macroscopically or with naked eyes. The study showed that the overall percentage of chickens from 17 flocks was 17%. The occurrence of TD in flocks were ranging from 10% to 83% with the highest percentage (83%) were recorded from group K of 22 days old chickens. The incident of TD was high in chickens reared in closed house system (31%) when compared to the open house system (13%). High incidence of TD was recorded in unhealthy chickens(22%) when compared to healthy chckens (3%). There were hihg incidence of CCRD in chickens with TD (71%) and viral arthritis (83%). The study showed that the mean of growth plate of tibia without any TD lesions was 1.59mm, and 1.41mm for the tarsal. The longest lenght of growth plate observed in this study was 22mm long owned by one chicken from group C. Upon scoring of the lesions, the percentage of the chickens with mild (score1), moderate (score2) and severe (score3) lesions were 20%, 1% and 1% respectively.Histologically, there were presence of mononuclear inflammatory cells in the joint tissue which is consistence to those of reovirus infection. The ELISA results showed that eight out of ten groups of chickens were positive for reovirus antibody. It was concluded that the incidence of TD in 17 flocks of broiler chickens from 6 farms in Johore and Perak were 17% and 22% based on macroscopic examination and mesurement of lesion (lesion scoring), respectively. The incident of TD was high in closed house system (31%), unhealthy chickens (22%), chickens with CCRD (71%) and viral arthritis (83%). Seventy two percent of chickens with CCRD had viral arthritis and were positive for reovirus antibody. In determining TD, measurement and lesion scoring is a better technique compared to macroscopic observation.
