Gaia:A cross-sectional study to elucidate distribution, asscociated risk factors and antibiotic resistance of Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis in lactating cows in selected dairy farms was carried out in December 2005. A total of 197 milk sampels form quarters of 52 lactating cows here tested using California mastitis test and bacteriological culture. Cow nfection rate showed that 71.2% had subclinical mastitis and 55.8% had Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis. However, quarter infection rate revealed that 44.7% had subclinical mastitis and 62.5% of all the positive CMT score quarters had Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis. The prevalence of subclinical S. aureus mastitis was higher in strong positive CMT score (66.7%) compared to weak CMT scores (61.5%). Cows managed under hand milking system were more affected (50.9%) than those managed under machine milking system (49.1%). Prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis was significantly influence by age and number of lactation (p<0.05). Older animals were at greater risk (34.3% at quarter level) of acquiring Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis infection than ypunger animals (20.7%). Animals at high number of lactation were at greater risk (29.4% at quarter level) of acquiring Staphylococcus aureus subclinical mastitis infection than in lower number of lactation (26.8% at quarter level).Cow in late group of lactation period of cows showed higher prevelence of S. aureus subclinical mastitis (38.2% at quater level) Cow that producing less 10 L milk everyday had the higher prevalence of S. aureus subclinicak mastitis (37.7% at the quater level cimpared to cow that producing more than 10 L milk everyday (18.2%). Cylindrical udder shape showed higher prevalence (34.1%) compared to funnel udder shape(23.2%) whereas teat with abnormal condition showed higher prevalence of subclinical mastitis (75.0% at quarter level) compared to normal teat (26.9% at quarter level) Left fore quarter of the teat showed the highest prevalence of S. aureus subclinical mastitis (33.3%). Sensitivity testing on Staphylococcus aureus revealed the highest percentage of antibiotic susceptibility againsttetracycline (84.8%) and most resistant to penicillin G (31.8%).
