Daily total energy intake was assessed using 3 days 24-hour dietary recalls. Data on food choice motives were collected using the Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ). It consisted of 38 items designed to assess the importance of ten factors, namely health, mood, convenience, sensory appeal, natural content, price, weight control, familiarity, ethical concern and religion in food selection. A total of 245 respondents were recruited in this study comprising of 49.6% male and 50.4% female students. The mean age of the respondents was 14.18 ± 1.22 years. Majority of the subject were of normal weight (68.2%), followed by overweight (27.3%) and underweight (4.5%). The means of total energy intakes for males and females were reported to be 1635 ± 516 kcal, which did not meet the RNI for Malaysia. Both the male and female respondents rated religion (4.57 ± 0.60) as the most prominent factor determining food selection, followed by health (4.35 ± 0.68) and weight control (4.05 ± 0.81) factors. Meanwhile, familiarity factor (3.53 ± 0.81) was ranked as the least prominent food choice motive. There were significant differences in motives of health, mood, convenience, sensory appeal, weight control, ethical concern and religion for food selection between males and females (P<0.05). Age was found to be significantly and positively correlated with convenience, familiarity and ethical concern factors (p<0.05). Meanwhile, household income was significantly and negative correlated with convenience, price and familiarity factors (p<0.05). All 10 food choice motives and energy intake were not significantly related to BMI (p>0.05). All of the socio-demographic factors were not significantly related with BMI, except for household size (r=-0.138, p<0.05). Among the food choice motives studied, the adolescent were influenced by religion, health and weight control factors. As is consistent in other findings, the female subjects were more concerned with healthy food choices. Older adolescents were more concerned with convenience, familiarity and ethical concern factors in food choice. The subjects in the study were from a moderate to high household income where factors such as convenience, price and familiarity influence their food choice. The results obtained in this study suggested that total energy intake and food choice motives might not influence the body weight status of the subjects in this study. Future studies might include physical activity level which would be the most suspected factors that influences the body weight status of subjects in this study.
