Description
Summary:The aim of this study were to compare the effects of insulin-like growth factor -1 (IGF-1), between treatment and control groups, on body weight, average daily gain, percentage bodyweight gain, health status and fecal coliform counts in weaners. A total of 50 commercial breed (Landrace and Duroc) weaners were selected from a Penang pig farm. Weaners were equally distributed into control and treatment group based on their body weight and sex. The control group was fed with commercial diet while the treatment group fed with commercial diet with IGF-R added into the feed. Body weights of weaners were recorded every 15 days. In this study, IGF-1 treatment group showed statistically significant improvement in body weight and average daily gain towards the end of the study (45 days). No different in percentage of body weight gain between control and treatment group was noticed. No signs of toxicity and infections were observed in both control and treatment group from the blood parameter obtained. From the study, it showed that IGF-1 treated group had lower coliform count compare to control group which indicate that IGF-1 may have beneficial effects to gastrointestinal tract.
