Summary:Abstract Introduction: Worldwide the prevalence of children and adolescents who are overweight and obesity has increased tremendously, which make it one of the most common chronic disorders in this age group and in adulthood. Obese adolescents have twice the risk to die prematurely of illness or self-inflicted injury compared to non-obese adolescents. Objective: To determine prevalence and associated factors of obesity among secondary school students in Putrajaya, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia. Methodology: This is an analytic cross-sectional study. Self-administered questionnaire in Bahasa Malaysia was used as instrument to collect data on sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity and smoking status. Weight and height was measured and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. Total sample size was 1818 students. All data was analysed using the SPSS version 22. Result: The response rate is 82.6%. The prevalence of overweight and obesity are 9.7% and 6.2% respectively. There was significant association between overweight & obesity and physical activity (χ²= 9.574, P= 0.002), overweight & obesity tobacco smoking status(χ²= 6.982, P= 0.008). The odds of developing obesity is 0.467 times lower in those with active physical activity (OR = 0.467, CI = 0.288,0.758, p = 0.002). The odds of developing obesity is 2.161 higher in those classified as tobacco cigarette smokers (OR = 2.161, CI = 1.209,3.861, p = 0.009). Therefore, physical activity is a protective factor from obesity and tobacco smoking is a risk factor of obesity. Conclusion: These study had identified that the prevalence of overweight and obesity among secondary school students in Putrajaya as well as the associated factors and predictors of overweight and obesity which are physical activity and tobacco smoking. The findings can contribute to the existing knowledge on obesity among secondary school students and help policy makers in improving the health status of secondary students via effective health education and health promotion.
