520 |a A cross-sectional comparative study was carried out among Malay preschool children in Balakong and Teras Jernang, Selangor with the aims to determine the Indoor Air Quality and its association with respiratory health. A total of 61 preschool children aged 5-6 years old from two preschools located in Balakong were selected as studied group while 50 preschool children from two preschools in Teras Jernang were selected as comparative group. Selection were based on several inclusive criteria; only preschool children ranging from 5 to 6 years old, healthy, Malays, and free form any respiratory illness were selected. A set of questionnaire adopted from The American Thoracic Society, 'Questionnaire A TS-DLD-C WHO (l 982)' was used to obtain the background information, exposure history and respiratory symptoms while MM-SP004 Tabletop Portable Spirometer was used to conduct lung function test among children. The indoor air quality monitoring instruments used in this study includes TSJ 8520 DustTrak Airborne Particle Monitor for particulate matter PM2.5 and PM 10; PbbRAE Portable YOC Monitor (pbbRAE 3000) for volatile organic compounds (VOCs); Q-Trak Plus Model 8554 Monitor for carbon dioxide (C02), carbon monoxide (CO), Temperature and Relative humidity; and TSJ Yelocicalc Plus Model 8386 for air velocity. Statistical analysis showed significant difference between indoor air quality in studied and comparative preschools for all the parameters measured (p<O.OOl) except for CO2 and air velocity. Preschools in studied area recorded higher PM25, PMIO, and CO concentration compared to preschools in comparative area. FVC (Liter), FEY 1 (Liter), FYC% predicted and FEVj% predicted values were significantly lower among studied group compared to comparative group (p<O.OOl). Exposure to indoor concentration of PM25 and CO increased the risk of getting lung function abnormality among study respondents and the exposures to PM25, PM 10, VOCs and CO were associated with cough and wheezing symptoms in study respondents with (OR=2.688, 95% CJ=1.065¬6.785), (OR=5.318, 95% CJ=1.696-16.677), (OR=0.231, 95% CI=0.088-0.605), and (OR=5.782, 95% CJ=1.616-20.692). Logistic regression was conducted to determine the main factor that influenced the abnormality of lung function and respiratory symptoms among study respondents after controlling all the confounders in this study. The finding concluded that the exposures to poor indoor air quality might increase the risk of getting lung function abnormality as well as respiratory problems among study respondents.
