Summary: | The composition and distribution of ectoparasites on Rattus norvegicus were investigated at HUSM, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. A total of 62 ectoparasites were successfully recovered from seven Rattus norvegicus comprised of five males and two females. Six species were identified from 3 groups of ectoparasite (mites, sucking lice and fleas) i.e. Xenopsylla cheopis, Dermanyssus gallinae, Ornithonyssus bacoti, Laelaps nuttali, Hoplopleura acanthopus and Polyplax spinulosa. The most common ectoparasite infesting R. norvegicus at HUSM, Kubang Kerian is O. bacoti for both sexes. The lowest percentage of infection to R. norvegicus in both male and female is D. gallinae. All parameters show that ectoparasite load and body size of R. norvegicus did not show significant relationship. There is also no association between ectoparasites load on both sexes of R. norvegicus. Ectoparasite load also did not have any significant correlation with the weight of R .norvegicus in this study. This was due to the small sample size as a result of low trapping success. |
