Description
Summary:The main purpose of this study was to examine the economic wellbeing and food insecurity of low income household at PPR Seri Semarak, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. There were a total of 256 household head participated in this study where they were systematically drawn by using cluster sampling. The data were collected through a set of self-administered questionnaire. Malaysia Poverty Line Income (PLI) was used to categorize the economic well-being in which the household income was converted to per capita income beforehand. Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) was used to measure household food insecurity. The alpha value for the reliability test in Section B was 0.896. Chi-square test of independence was conducted to analyze the data by using IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Statistics. The finding demonstrated that there was a significant association between household size and economic well-being, 2 (4, 256) = 25.133 with p= 0.000 as well as with food insecurity, 2 (6, 256) = 35.989 with p= 0.000. In addition, the result revealed that food insecurity is not independent on economic wellbeing, 2 (6, 256) = 52.564 with p= 0.000. Lastly, the study concluded that the socio-demographic factors did affect economic well-being and food insecurity by different way. The findings suggest that there was necessary to review the Malaysia PLI. The future researchers are suggested to use a more comprehensive instrument in measuring the level of economic well-being. The association between economic well-being and food insecurity has been proved and it should be paid attention in future research.
