要約: | Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and bronchitis are one of the world's leading causes of death Prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, as well as medical procedures such as organ transplantation cancer chemotherapy and major surgery, are becoming more challenge for present clinicians. Antimicrobial agents are used to prevent and beat microbial infections by bacteria, h e s and parasites. Nevertheless, indiscriminate use of the antimicrobial agents has resulted in microorganism developing resistance towards them. Methicilin -susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicilin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) carry resistance genes for various antibiotics, and are major pathogens causing life-threatening infections. Therefore, there is a need to develop new antimicrobial substances from other sources including natural resources such as plants to ensure a sustainable control of various infectious diseases. Christia vespertilionis or known as Butterfly Wing has been used traditionally to treat tuberculosis, bronchitis, inflamed tonsil and colds. The plant showed significant anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic and antimalarial activities. This study determined the antimicrobial activities of leaves crude extracts of C. vespertilionis towards MSSA and MRSA. The plant extracts were prepared using cold maceration method by sequential extraction with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol The dried extracts from each solvent were re-dissolved using their respective solvents (HH, CC, EE and MM extracts) and dimethysulfoxide (DMSO) (H, C, E and M extracts). Inhibition of bacterial growth was determined using disc diffusion method at a concentration of 100 mg/mL for both MSSA and MRSA. Meanwhile, broth dilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracts at the concentration ranging from 31.25 to 250 mg/mL towards MSSA and MRSA. All the experiments were performed in triplicates. Among all the extracts, only hexane extracts (H and HH) and ethyl acetate extracts (E and EE) showed the inhibition zone ranging from 8 to 14 mm with the presence of some colonies within the zone, towards both MSSA and MRSA. Meanwhile, no inhibition was exhibited by the other extracts. The MIC values for all of the extracts were not detected even at the highest concentration of 250 mg/mL. In conclusion only hexane and ethyl acetate leave extracts of C. vespertilionis exhibited antimicrobial activities towards MSSA and MRSA. |
