The histopathological evaluation of brain, kidney & gills with Aeromonas hydrophila infection in different sexes of red hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) /

The study conducted was aimed to compare the severity of histopathological lesions post-Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) challenge on selected organs such as the brain, kidney, liver, spleen and gills between male and female red hybrid tilapia fish. A total of 30 tilapia fingerlings were divided...

520 |a The study conducted was aimed to compare the severity of histopathological lesions post-Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) challenge on selected organs such as the brain, kidney, liver, spleen and gills between male and female red hybrid tilapia fish. A total of 30 tilapia fingerlings were divided into 3 groups; Group A: 10 male fish, Group B: 10 female fish and Group C: 5 male and 5 female fish as the control group. All the fish has undergone acclimatization period for a week before they (A and B only) are challenged with A. hydrophila. Routine cleaning and feeding with commercial feed were done twice daily. Sampling was done on day 7 (D-7) and day 14 (D-14) for lesion scoring microscopically on their brain, kidney and gills tissues. According to the results in SPSS version 25, Group B has higher severity of histopathological alterations (p<0.05) in the kidney compared to Group A. Other than that, both groups did not show any significant differences in other organs. The survivability rate of Group A was 10% higher than Group B throughout the study. In conclusion, the severity of histopathological changes in brain, kidney and gills due to A. hydrophila infection between male and female tilapia are significantly different (p<0.05) in some of the lesions being scored but the male tilapia are able to tolerate the infection better than female tilapia.
