Description
Summary:This study investigated the therapeutic effects of ethanolic extract of Phyllanthus niruri (PN) leaves on gentamicin-induced renal injury in mice. A total of 92 mice were divided into five groups namely controls, gentamicin, and gentamicin treated with three levels of PN doses; 75 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg. Control and gentamicin groups were injected with normal saline and gentamicin at 100 mg/kg body weight once daily for six day, respectively. The extract of PN leaves was given orally via oral lavage, daily, daily , until the mice were sacrificed at days 7, 10, 13 and 16 of the experimental period. Renal biochemistry parameters and histological lesions of the kidneys were evaluated. Results showed that at day 13 of theexperimental period, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were significantly (p<0.05) lower in mice treated with PN at 75 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg as compared to the gentamicin group. At day 16, the BUN levels of all mice treated with three different doses of the PN leaf extract were significantly (p<0.05) lower than the gentamicin group. Blood creatinine levels and renal histology were normal in all groups. It is suggested that PN leaf extract has therapeutic potential for treatment of gentamicin-induced renal injury in mice.
