Acaricidal effects of essential oil on rhipicephalus sanguineus /
Rhipicephalus sanguineus is an important ectoparasite as they are a vector for many diseases that could be passed on to dogs and humans. The current way of eradication of R. sanguineus using the same acaricides has rendered the ticks to become resistant. Thus, a new acaricide has to be found...

The current way of eradication of R. sanguineus using the same acaricides has rendered the ticks to become resistant. Thus, a new acaricide has to be found and tested. Usage of essential oil has become a popular trend as a tick repellent for dogs. This study aims to find out if essential oil can kill the ticks of different life stages and/or inhibit oviposition in the engorged ticks. The ticks were collected from 3 dogs from a private shelter located in Kepong. There are 2 experiments done which are the immersion test and the packet test. The ticks are divided into 3 groups; Group A (immersion test), Group B (packet test), Group C (control). They are incubated at 27°C for 14 days. The result showed 100% mortality for the treated nymphs and adults in both groups. However, the essential oil failed to inhibit oviposition in the treated groups as there was no significant difference in the weight of the eggs. In conclusion, essential oil can be used as a new acaricide for ticks that are not | ||
