Changes in growth, physiological and biochemical responses of Orthosiphon stamineus (misai kucing) on diifferent rates of nitrogen and potassium /

One of the herbs that has created interest among many physicians around the world is Misai Kucing (O. stamineus). However, information and the study on the use of fertiliser (N and K) which will affect the biochemical content of O. stamineus are still limited. so, the objectives of this experiment w...

However, information and the study on the use of fertiliser (N and K) which will affect the biochemical content of O. stamineus are still limited. so, the objectives of this experiment were (i) to determine the optimum rate of N and K fertilizer on growth and development of O. stamineus; (ii) to evaluate the effects of using different rates of nitrogen and potassium on the physiological and biochemical (the content of phenolic) characteristics of O. stamineus; and (iii) to determine the best combination of nitrogen and potassium fertilizer rates for optimum production of phenolic's of O. stamineus. Two factors used in the experiment were fertilizer type (N using Urea; K using MOP) and four fertilizer rates for each fertilizer type (0, 90, 180, and 270 kg N or K/ha), giving a total combination of 16 treatments. All these treatments were arranged in three replications in a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD). Destructive analysis was carried out twice a week for three months. Growth parameters include plant height, leaf area, leaf expansion rate, nutrient analysis, RGR, NAR, SLA, and root to shoot ratio. The physiological data recorded was relative chlorophyll content, while biochemical data was total phenolic content (TPC). Data were analyzed by ANOVA using SAS program and the mean comparison test was carried out by using Least Significant Difference (LSD).The best result was by using treatment 7, which is a combination of 90kg/ha N with 180kg/ha K that had recorded the highest total leaf area, total biomass, and relative chlorophyll content.
