| Streszczenie: | Salmonella enteritidis (SE) is an important agent in human salmonellosis as it can easily enter the food chain unnoticed due to the chicken infected may be symptomless. It is important to control and prevent SE from entering the food chain thus leading to the objective of this study which is to determine the efficacy of inactivated Salmonella phage type (PT) combinations in broiler chickens. One hundred fourty eight, day old commercial broiler chicks were divided into 6 groups namely the Control, Groups A, B, C, D and E. The chicks in the Groups A, B, C, D and E were inoculated subcutaneously (0.1mL) with 10 11 cfu/mL of different combinations of SE phage types namely PT 6a+3a+35, PT 6a+3a+7, PT 6a+7+1, PT 6a+7=35 and PT 6a+3a+1, respectively while the Control group remains uninoculated. The chicks were subdivided to challenged and non-challenged group at Day 14 post inoculation (pi). The chicks in the challenged groups were challenged with 1.0mL SE PT 6a (10 8 cfu/mL) orally at day 14 pi while non-challenged group remain unchallenged. Four chicks from each control, inoculated and challenged groups were sacrificed at day 0, 7, 14, 17 and 21 pi. The study showed that the non-challenged control and inoculated groups had no abnormal clinical signs and the chicks were healthy with good appetite throughout the trial. The chicks in the challenged control groups showed more severe clinical signs compared to all the inoculated groups at day 3 and day 7 post SE challenged (pc). The body weight of the non-challenged control and inoculated groups showed gradual gain throughout the trial. The control challenged groups, control group showed significant (p<0.05) reduction in body weight compared to all the inoculated groups. SE was not isolated in all samples from all the non-challenged control and inoculated groups throughout the trial. In the SE challenged groups, the control group showed positive isolation of SE in cecal tonsils (100%), intestine (75%), cloacal swabs (25%), and spleen (25%). For the inoculated groups, SE was isolated in all groups ranging from 25% to 75% pc except for group D. The control group has the highest number of total SE isolation compared to the inoculated chicks. SE was mostly isolated from cecal tonsil. No antibody against SE was detected in all groups throughout the trial. It was concluded that the SE PT 6a+7+35 combination is the most effective SE PT combination to provide protection against SE challenged when compared with other SE PT combination. It provides full protection (100%) to the chicken when challenged with SE PT 6a. |
