要約: | The study aims to understand the reproductive performance of the female captive Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) in captivity. Assessment of the reproductive performance is essential to monitor the breeding efficacy of the critically endangered Malayan tiger in captivity. A retrospective study was performed on the breeding and daily records of 12 female Malayan tigers from January 2015to December 2019 in the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC), Sungkai Perak. The age at first behavioural oestrous was 3 years old. Intriguingly, an old female tiger aged more than 11 years old shown the highest frequency of behavioural oestrous. The female captive Malayan tiger displayed the behavioural oestrous and mating all year round, with an average estrus length of(mean± s.d) of 3 .9±1.98 days ranging from 1 to 17 days. The result showed that 'prusten' or vocalization was the most observable estrus sign during estrus period. During the five years course, only one tiger bred once and produced 3 cubs that did not survive through one-year of age. These results provide that the behavioural analysis could be used as the estrous determination, but additional information is still needed to assess their suitability. Besides that, feeding behaviour was also observed and analysed as a potential estrous monitoring tool, however no significant differences at (P<0.05) were found between the day of behavioural oestrous and the feed balance. In conclusion, the oestrous cyclicity of the female Malayan tiger appears normal however it does not correspond toward the successful breeding in captivity thus warrant further investigation. |
