Improving zea mays L. plant growth variables and yield using liquid fertilizer extracted from forest litter compost /

Forest litter is usually left to decompose or sometimes burned. This litter will eventually cause pollution as it produces hazardous gases that increase surrounding temperature, deplete 0zone layer, and also harmful to human respiration system through smokes and haze. Thus, a better way of treating...

This litter will eventually cause pollution as it produces hazardous gases that increase surrounding temperature, deplete 0zone layer, and also harmful to human respiration system through smokes and haze. Thus, a better way of treating forest litter needs to be implemented due to concern for environmental and human health. The objectives of this study to: (i) improve Zea mays L. growth and grain yield using liquid fertilizer from forest litter (ii) determine the suitable rate of liquid fertilizer which improve Zea mays L. growth and grain yield. Treatments evaluated were: (i) Recommended rate of chemical fertilizer (T1), (ii) No fertilization (T2), (iii) 25% of liquid fertilizer (T3), (iv) 50% of liquid fertilizer (T4), (v) 75% of liquid fertilizer (TS), and (vi) 100% of liquid fertilizer (T6). Similar rate of biochar was added to the treatments except for T1. The experiment was conducted at Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus, Malaysia on a sandy loam soil. The experimental design was randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications (block). Selected soil and maize plants physico-chemical properties were analyzed using standard procedures. The liquid fertilizer increased soil total N, P, and K. Leaves and stem dry matter yield, plant height, number of leaves, total N, P, and K uptake increased proportionally with increasing rate of liquid fertilizer applied. Tó can substitute TI for maize as its effects on soils and plant nutrients were similar. In conclusion, application of liquid fertilizer produced from forest litter compost improved plant growth variables and yield. The suitable rate of the liquid fertilizer that could be used to substitute the use of chemical fertilizers in Zea mays L. production is 160 mL.
