Effect of coccidiosis on growth and hematological parameters in dorper lambs /

There is a limited number of studies reported on the effect of coccidiosis in Dorper sheep in Malaysia. A study was then conducted to examine the association between growth and hematological parameters and coccidian infecitonin Dorper lambs. Faecal samples of 20 purebred and 20 corssbred two to t...

A study was then conducted to examine the association between growth and hematological parameters and coccidian infecitonin Dorper lambs. Faecal samples of 20 purebred and 20 corssbred two to three month-old Dorper lambs were taken twice at 7-day interval. Blood samples were collected once for hematology profile. The mucosa colour of the eyes was measured once using the FAMACHA chart. Body weight, body length, height at withers and heart girth measurements were also taken. Eimeria oocysts were positive in all purebred and 90% of crossbred Dorper lambs. Eimeria species identified and their frequency percentage were E. parva (31%), E. marcisa (18%), E. weybrid gensis (17%), E. pallida (12%), E. pallida (12%), E. bakuensis (11%), E. faurei (5%), E. ahsata (4%) and E. granulosa (2%). Total oocysts per gram (OPG), body weight, body length, height at withers and heart girth showed non-significant association with bred groups. However, there was a significant correlation between body weight and OPG (r= -0.49, P>0.01). The severity of coccidiosis as measured by OPG when classified as low-medium, high and very high showed a significant correlation (r=0.476, P<0.01) with FAMACHA score. There was non-significant association (P>0.05) between breed groups for packed cell volume and plasma protein. However, there were significant differences between breed groups for electrolyte parameters (Na, K and C1), P<0.05). In conclusion, there were no significant differences in growth, PCV and PP levels between purebred and crossbred Dorper lambs while coccidiosis appeared to affect body weight, FAMACHA scores and electrolyte levels.
