Résumé: | Introduction: Morib beach is one of the beach that located in west coastal area of Kuala Langat, Selangor that well known among people of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Most of the visitors come to enjoy the beach bathing at Morib beach. However, there are no study yet conducted in that area to study the quality of beach water in terms of microbial contaminants. Objectives: This study was intended to determine and compare the concentration of total coliform and Escherichia coli (E.coli) at Morib beach of bathing zones with national standard and to determine the correlation between concentration of total coliform, E.coli and physicochemical parameters of beach water. The commonly reported perceived health symptoms also had been assessing in this study among the respondents of exposure. Methods: Samples of beach water were collected from eight sampling point selected randomly along the Morib beach. The samples were analyzed by using membrane filtration method using a simultaneous detection technique with m- ColiBlue24® broth that detects total colifom and E.coli. Perceived health symptoms that commonly reported among the beach visitors were assess by using questionnaire. Results: The concentrations of total coliform and E.coli were found highest at sampling point K17 with 334 cfu/l00ml and 208 cfu/100 ml. The most commonly reported perceived health symptoms among respondents were skin and ear symptoms. Physicochemical parameters of the sampling water for temperature, salinity and Dissolved Oxygen having significant relationship with the concentration of total coliform and E.coli. Conclusion: This study showed concentration of total coliform and E.coli was higher at the bathing zone exceeds the national standard for E.coli. Keywords: Morib beach, microbial contaminants, perceived health symptoms, physicochemical parameters. |
