Achoimre:In this study, the scale and otolith were used to determine the age of Lates calcarifer. Thirty samples of fish were bought from nearest market. The fish were divided into two groups based on the total length (TL) of the fish, namely immature (<32 cm total length) and mature (>32 cm total length) fish. Based on scales, the age of immature group was estimated between 3 to 5 years old, while the age of the mature group was estimated from 4 to 7 years old. Based on otoliths, the age of immature group was estimated from 2 to 4 years old, while for mature group was from 3 to 5 years old. The scale radius 1, scale radius 2, scale radius 3, scale radius 6 and scale radius 7 in mature Lates calcarifer were significantly larger (P<0.05) than those in immature Lates calcarifer. The scale length, scale width, scale radius 4 and scale radius 5 were not significantly different (P>0.05) between the immature and mature Lates calcarifer. There was no significant different (P>0.05) of the otolith length, otolith width, otolith radius 1, otolith radius 2, and otolith radius 4 between the immature and mature Lates calcarifer, while the otolith radius 3 and otolith radius 5 were significantly different (P<0.05) between immature and mature Lates calcarifer. The results suggested that the age estimation using the otolith was more reliable and accurate than the scale method.
