In the Cameron Highlands, the widespread and indiscriminate use of pesticides has resulted in numerous undesirable problems; hence prompting the need for a more rational outlook, the integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Initial development of the IPM programme for DBM was aimed at reducing the use of insecticides while ensuring crop yields and revenues. Excessive use of insecticides was avoided through using the insecticides only when necessary as guide by provisional economic thresholds. The feasibility of such a programme, encompassing the integration of permethrin, Bacillus thuringiensis Berl., parasitoids and pheromone traps, was examanined in stages over six fields trials conducted at the MARDI Research Station at Tanah Rata in Pahang as well as in farmer's fields. The IPM programe was evaluated against the existing pest control practices whereby cabbage was sprayed against DBM at three to four days intervals. The information monitored included the king of insecticides used, pest and natural enemy populations, crop yields and overall production costs. Preliminary findings based on net revenue attainable as well as reductions in spray frequency in the IPM programme showed that it was in general not inferior to the farmers prophylactic practice. There were indications that IPM may not always be optimal, being governed also by the degree of DBM infestations, damage by other pests and diseases and price fluctuations. During the studies, several technical and socio-economic constraints were encountered. These are discussed together with suggestions for future requirements, in particular the undertakings needed to further refine the IPM programme for translation into practical realities.Malaysian Plant Protection SocietyKuala Lumpur (Malaysia)2013-05-09T02:51:01Z2013-05-09T02:51:01Z1985Proceedings PaperArticleNon-RefereedProceedings of the seminar on integrated pest management in Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), 16-17 Jan 1984, p. 191-208http://agris.upm.edu.my:8080/dspace/handle/0/1257MY8505799en
