Description
Summary:The antifungal activities of five mangrove plants against several facultative plant parasites on local plants were studied. The mangrove plants are Avicennia marina (Forsk) Vierh., Aegiceras corniculatum (L) Blance, Kandelia candel (L) Druce, Excoecaria agallocha L. and Acanthus ilicifolius L. Plants were dried, dissected into portions of leaves, stems and roots and their respective extracts were obtained. The fungal pathogens included Alternaria dauci on Daucus carota, Cercospora ipomoeae on Ipomoea reptans, Diplocarpon rosae on Rosa, Fusarium moniliforme on Sanseviera trifasciata. The colony diameter method was used as the bioassay to test the antifungal activities of the plant extracts. Results showed that there was significant inhibition of growth in all pathogens tested. Excoecaria root and Kandelia root showed the highest percentage inhibition whereas the stem of Acanthus was least effective in inhibiting fungal growth when compared with the control. Fusarium and Cercospora were inhibited by all the plant extracts but Alternaria was least affected. In the search for natural agrochemicals for disease control, the mangrove plants appear promising if they could be exploited commercially.
