| Resumo: | Although forest resources are growing every year, thinning of man-made forests is inadequate in Japan. Thinning is indispensable to keep man-made forests healthy and vigorous and to improve the various functions of forests for public benefit. Thus, the Forestry Agency started to take measures to promote thinning. Recently, severe demands for forest resources such as environmental consideration and sustainable management have been increasing. Therefore, harvesting operations must consider the forest environment. In 2001, the author conducted a study to understand the current state of thinning operations with forestry machinery. The author sent questionnaires to forestry enterprises such as logging companies and forest owners associations, which carry out timber harvesting. There were about 100 respondents. As a result of this investigation, the author could understand the current state of thinning operations such as harvesting systems, labor productivity, thinning costs, and so on. |
