Crynodeb: | Pyrolysis of oil palm biomass was carried out using novel microwave radiation technique. In this study, pyrolysis was performed in an inert environment at atmospheric conditions with the help of a semi-fluidised bed system embedded in the microwave cavity. The aim was to investigate the influence of microwave pyrolysis condition on the quality of bio-oil and the char products. A 1 kW domestic
microwave with suitable modifications was used to carry out the necessary reaction. Effects of microwave absorber on the yield of bio-oil were observed. The ratio of biomass to the microwave absorber had a significant effect on the yield of bio-oil. An
image analysis of char was also presented to compare the conventionally and microwave obtained char. Power input of 300 Wand above was reqUired to initiate the pyrolysis of biomass. Initial physical characterization was carried out to confirm the bio-oil. This study concluded that microwave pyrolysis can be further developed and optimised to convert the biomass into biofuels and value-added products with efficient cost, time and energy. |
