Summary:Conventional refining method, either by chemical or physical means involves degumming and bleaching to remove certain amounts of unwanted impurities such as phospholipids, trace metals, colouring pigments and free fatty acid (FFA). Large amount of water and chemicals are required for this processes which leads to waste disposal problems and oil losses. thus, this paper reports the application of ceramic microfiltration membrane as an energy efficient and environmental friendly method to remove undesired impurities particularly phospholipids and iron from crude palm oil. Other quality parameters including FFA, carotene and fatty acid composition (FAC) were analysed. It was found that ceramic membrane with pore size of 0.2 micron removed 56.8% of phosporus from crude palm oil. This membrane also removed about 84% of iron from crude palm oil. However, there were significant differences in FFA, carotene and FAC levels between membrane-filtered oil and crude palm oil.
